Inter-Hall Challenge logoAbout the Challenge

The annual RecycleMania Hall Challenge started in 2011 and happens in the first three weeks of RecycleMania. It's an opportunity for halls to earn Inter-Hall Challenge points and encourages residents to up their recycling game at the start of RecycleMania, helping OSU compete!

The 2017 competition ran February 6-24. All halls won points in the Inter-Hall Challenge, with the greatest number being awarded to the halls in 1st through 5th place. Rankings are based on total pounds of commingled recycling per person in each hall, which is collected once per week over the three weeks. Commingled recycling includes halls' big orange carts (cardboard, glass and trash are not factored into the results).

About RecycleMania

RecycleMania is an annual 8-week competition for U.S. college and university recycling programs to see who can recycle the most! OSU competes for the largest amount of recyclables per capita, largest amount of total recyclables and highest recycling rate (percent of the waste stream that is recycled). Campus Recycling weighs and measures all trash, recycling, and compost from on campus and reports it weekly during the competition. OSU has been competing since 2005. For more information on the national competition, visit the official RecycleMania website.

The results page will be updated weekly during the competition to show OSU's stats and rankings against other schools. View the results from 2010-2016.

trophyAbout the RecycleMania Civil War

In 2010, Oregon State University and the University of Oregon created our own RecycleMania Civil War competition. The competition is to see which university can produce the highest per capita weight for recycling and compost combined. A UO student created a trophy out of all reused materials, which was passed between schools depending on who won. Unfortunately the trophy has since been lost.

OSU won for the first three years until UO beat us for the first time in 2013 and again in 2014. OSU won the trophy back in 2015 but UO reclaimed it in the 2016 competition and again in 2017.
