Below is a list of all materials that can be collected for recycling on the OSU Corvallis campus. Visit the main recycle guide page for links to specific recycle guides.

What to do:

Batteries

Bin: Battery Bucket
Instructions: Place in nearest battery recycling bin (Valley Library or UHDS service center) or request pickup using EHS's online hazardous waste pickup request form.

Cardboard (corrugated)

Bin: Cardboard Cage
Instruction: Flatten & place in nearest marked cardboard container (outside your building); pizza boxes are acceptable only if not contaminated with food; remove packing materials; do NOT place cardboard in bagstands. Learn more about cardboard box recycling in this video.

Cartons (e.g. for milk or broth)

Bin: Slim Jim or Red Bin (depts.) or Commingled Bins (res. halls)
Instructions: Cut open & rinse, place in nearest bin. NO food contamination, ice cream containers or coffee cups (learn why coffee cups are not recyclable in this video), please.

Compost

Instructions: Please see our Department Compost page for the options we currently offer.

Confidential Materials

Bin: Confidential Cart or Box

Instructions: Place in confidential cart or collect in box, mark "To be Shredded", and use our online service request form to request pickup. Fees apply.See more on our Confidential Shredding page.

Electronic Media 

  • CDs
  • Floppy disks
  • Cassettes
  • VHS tapes & their cases
Instructions: Collect in a box, mark 'recycle' and place next to regularly serviced recycle bin.
E-waste Instructions: Please send all electronic waste, working or not, to Surplus. Read more on the E-Waste page.
Film Plastic & Hard Plastic (plastics not accepted in commingle) Instructions: We may be able to collect these hard-to-recycle plastics if they are sorted out separately. Please contact us to discuss options.

Glass

  • Bottles

Bin: Slim Jim or Red Bin (depts.) or Orange Glass Bin (res. halls)
Instructions: Empty/rinse & place in nearest bin. NO food contamination, glass or ceramic dishes, labware or window glass, please. Some metal lids from glass containers are recyclable; see the metal section (below) for details.

 

Metal

Bin: Slim Jim or Red Bin (depts.) or Commingled Bins (res. halls)
Instructions: Empty/rinse & place in nearest bin. Loosely ball up foil (learn more about foil recycling this video). Empty aerosol cans acceptable if contained non-hazardous material. Metals lids 2 inches or greater across may be recycled; smaller lids are not recyclable unless collected in a metal can (learn more in this video). NO food contamination, please.
Packaging Peanuts

Instructions: Box/Bag them, mark 'recycle' and place next to a regularly serviced recycling bin. Both plastic and biodegradable peanuts accepted (they are reused, not recycled). For Styrofoam blocks, see below.

Paper
  • Computer paper of any color
  • Envelopes with windows and paper folders
  • Barometer and other newspapers
  • Glossy paper magazines, ad inserts, etc.
  • Paperboard (heavy, non-corrugated paper such as cereal boxes)
  • Whole books and bound notebooks (NO binders)
  • Brown bags
  • Butcher paper
  • White/gray/brown paper packing material
  • Paper egg cartons
Bin: Bagstand (depts.) or Commingled Bin (res. halls)
Instructions: Place in the nearest bin. Staples, paperclips, & small amounts of tape are acceptable. Books do not need to be altered before recycling. Do NOT place paper in cardboard cages. Please put shredded paper in a paper bag to keep it contained. NO napkins, paper towels, paper plates or coffee cups (learn why coffee cups are not recyclable in this video), please.

Plastic

Bin: Slim Jim or Red Bin (depts.) or Commingled Bins (res. halls)
Instructions: Learn more about what plastics are recyclable in this video. Empty/rinse & place in nearest bin. Only flip-off lids on tubs are recyclable; all screw-on plastic lids are trash (learn more in this video). NO food contamination, plastic bags or wrap, plastic to-go containers, coffee cups, plates, flatware, please.
Scrap Wood & Metal Instructions: Request pickup using our online service request or call at 7-2925.
Shredded Paper Instructions: Place in a bag or box, mark 'recycle' and place next to your bagstand. In residence halls, contain in a paper bag and place in the commingle bin.
Styrofoam Instructions: We are able to collect and recycle certain Styrofoam packing materials from OSU departments if it is separated into a bag or bin. Learn more in this video and/or contact us to discuss details and options.
Toner & Ink Cartridges Instructions: Collect in a box, mark 'recycle' and place next to regularly serviced recycle bin.
