GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF CLASS
The ARCHITECTURAL DRAFTER 1 prepares construction drawings and
specifications, or parts thereof, from notes, sketches, and measurements provided by agency architects, engineers,
or project participants to be used in the construction, alteration, and maintenance of State facilities. Duties
are usually performed in a normal work setting.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES
This is the first level of a two-level series. This class is
distinguished from the higher level by, (1) work assignments which are more clearly defined with most technical
information provided by others, (2) limited contact outside the work unit, and (3) the close supervision and review
during preparation and upon completion of construction drawings.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Architectural Drafting.
Typical tasks: prepares construction drawings for new buildings, or for the repair or alteration of existing facilities,
using notes, sketches, and measurements provided by agency architects, engineers, or others; uses mechanical drafting
equipment to draw floor plans, site plans, elevations, and section details; incorporates electrical and mechanical
requirements of the project into structural plan; traces, transcribes, and updates plans for permanent storage
and future reference; may use Computer Aided Design (CAD) system to prepare plans.
- Preparation of Specifications, Material Schedules, and Estimates. Typical tasks: writes detailed specifications from information provided
by others which specify materials to be used in construction, including structural members (e.g., joists, studs,
rafters) and cover and finish materials (e.g., sheathing, siding, roofing, floor covering); itemizes materials
and computes an estimate of their cost; uses various reference sources to determine labor costs and estimates the
total cost for the job.
- Miscellaneous.
Typical tasks: updates, records, revises, and maintains site maps and plans of buildings within an agency or institution
as permanent records of new construction and alterations; orders and prepares blueprints; orders and maintains
inventory of drafting supplies; may assist in field surveys by positioning various measuring devices around a job
site.
RELATIONSHIPS WITH OTHERS
Employees in this class have limited contact outside the immediate
work unit. They occasionally contact material vendors to obtain technical information about construction products.
Employees may be contacted by contractors at various stages of a project to clarify parts of their drawings or
specifications. They may occasionally contact local building officials for information about building codes.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Employees in this class work under close supervision of an agency
architect, engineer, or project manager who reviews drawings and specifications during various stages of the design
process for neatness and technical accuracy. Guidelines used by employees in this class include Federal, State,
and local building codes; nationally recognized drafting standards; State and agency rules and procedures; vendor
materials catalogues; estimating guides; and structural manuals.

Positions are found in central and remote locations throughout
State government (e.g., general government agencies, human or natural resource agencies, correctional, mental health,
or higher education institutions, hospitals, etc.). They require the willingness to work within the environment
associated with the position's location.
