GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF CLASS
The ARCHITECTURAL DRAFTER 2 designs and prepares complete construction drawings, specifications, site plans, material schedules, and cost estimates for both new building projects and repair or alteration of existing facilities. Plans are developed from information gathered by the employee through field observations; from notes and sketches provided by agency architects, engineers, or outside contractors; and from conversations with those who will use the completed facility.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES
This is the second level of a two-level series. This class is distinguished from the lower level by, (1) the responsibility for gathering information necessary for drafting architectural plans, (2) the frequent contacts with persons outside the work unit to gather the information on design requirements, and (3) the independent nature of the work under general supervision.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Architectural Drafting. Typical tasks: prepares complete construction drawings and specifications for new construction projects or repair or alterations to existing facilities; meets with clients to obtain information about their specific requirements for the job; makes field observations and takes measurements to adapt structure to site; uses various manuals and catalogues for details, such as door and window dimensions and material requirements; refers to sketches and measurements provided by agency architects and engineers; incorporates electrical and mechanical requirements of the project into structural plan; uses mechanical drafting equipment to draw floor plans, site plans, elevations, and section details; may use Computer Aided Design (CAD) system to prepare plans.
- Preparation of Specifications, Material Schedules, and Estimates. Typical tasks: utilizes independent judgment and knowledge of construction practices to determine and specify materials and equipment to be used in construction, including all structural members (e.g., joists, studs, rafters), cover and finish materials (e.g., sheathing, siding, roofing, floor covering), electrical layout (wiring, receptacles, and fixtures), plumbing and HVAC systems, and any other special requirements of the project; itemizes materials and computes an estimate of their cost; uses various reference sources to determine labor costs and estimates the total cost for the job; may use computerized estimation and specification development systems.
- Miscellaneous. Typical tasks: updates, records, revises, and maintains site maps and plans of buildings within an agency or institution as permanent records of new construction and alterations; orders and prepares blueprints; orders and maintains inventory of drafting supplies; applies for and obtains building permits; interprets drawings for contractors or inspectors who may have problems or questions during construction; may inspect projects under construction to determine adherence to drawings and specifications.
RELATIONSHIPS WITH OTHERS
Employees in this class are in regular contact with clients to obtain and clarify information regarding their requirements for the construction project; and frequently will contact architects and engineers to discuss various aspects of the project. Employees occasionally contact local building officials to obtain permits and clarify codes and regulations. They may be contacted several times throughout a project by the contractor to clarify or interpret drawings. Employees also occasionally contact vendors to obtain information or place orders for materials and supplies.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Employees in this class work under general supervision of an agency architect, engineer, or project manager who reviews completed drawings for neatness and technical accuracy. Guidelines used by employees in this class include Federal, State, and local building codes and regulations, the Uniform Building Code, agency rules and procedures, architectural graphic standards, vendor materials catalogues, estimating guides, and structural manuals.
GENERAL INFORMATION
Positions are found in central and remote locations throughout State government (e.g., general government agencies, human or natural resource agencies, correctional, mental health, or higher education institutions, hospitals, etc.). They require the willingness to work within the environment associated with the position's location.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Two years of architectural drafting experience which includes 1) applying knowledge of structural, mechanical, electrical, and architectural drafting techniques; 2) working from plans and sketches provided by architects, engineers, and contractors; 3) preparing estimates of construction and design costs; and 4) preparing documents used as part of the bidding process.
On your application, you must be specific in describing your experience in all areas listed under "To Qualify." Failure to provide this information will result in your application not being accepted.
