GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF CLASS
The ASSISTANT PORT ENGINEER is responsible for the maintenance, repair, and modification of ships, boats and related support equipment.

This is a single classification and not currently part of a series of classes.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Maintenance. Typical tasks: installs electrical circuitry, electricmotors, generators, and controllers (A.C. and D.C.) in ships or boats when they are in port; repairs electrical and mechanical on-shore and on-board equipment; tests and measures the condition of ship's equipment for safety and repair needs; recommends improvements to electrical and mechanical system; repairs ship equipment when in port, such as motors, engines, compressors, refrigeration, cranes, air compressors, piping, and boilers; repairs support machinery, docks, and equipment ashore.
2. Machine Shop. Typical tasks: operates in-port welding and machine shops to support repair and maintenance needs of vessels; specifies, orders, and maintains stocks of electrical and machinery supplies and component parts; keeps inventory of machine shop tools and supplies; reports to Port Engineer on problems and progress of ship repair.
3. Miscellaneous. Typical tasks: prepares specifications for and inspects work performed by outside contractors; operates cranes, forklifts and other on-shore equipment; relieves Assistant Engineers at sea as required; acts for the Port Engineer in that employee's absence, within established limits.
RELATIONSHIPS WITH OTHERS:
Employees in this classification have daily contact with local contractors when the vessel is in port and repairs are being completed, to discuss their performance relative to lob specifications and timeframes. Work is requested by ship personnel and performed when the vessel is in port.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Employees in this class receive general supervision from the Port Engineer. Work is reviewed upon completion for quality and compliance with standards through reports and direct observation. Work is performed under standard agency maintenance and repair procedures.
GENERAL INFORMATION
Positions in this class are found on ships in port and at sea and in machine shops. They require the willingness to work within the environment associated with the position's location. They require the willingness to be at sea for extended periods of time. They require the willingness to work with and around electrical, mechanical, and welding equipment and machinery. Positions require the willingness to work at sea and stand watch on a relief basis.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Possession of an Assistant Engineer License, limited motor vessels of not more than 3000 horsepower upon oceans issued by the U.S. Coast Guard.
