GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF CLASS

The AUDIOVISUAL ASSISTANT aids in the provision of audiovisual services to faculty, students, and staff by delivering and setting up audiovisual equipment, assisting clients who are requesting audiovisual services, instructing in the use of equipment, cleaning and repairing film, and performing preventive maintenance on audiovisual equipment.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES

This is the first level of a three-level series. It is distinguished from the higher level by the absence of primary responsibility for the training of student workers, coordinating the delivery and setup of audiovisual and video equipment, and repairing audiovisual and sound amplification equipment.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Equipment Delivery and Setup. Typical tasks: delivers and sets up film and slide projectors, video recorders, sound amplification equipment, overhead projectors, television monitors, and other types of audiovisual equipment; operates equipment when requested by faculty or staff; returns equipment to proper storage area when no longer being used.
  2. Equipment Maintenance. Typical tasks: performs preventive maintenance on audiovisual equipment by checking equipment for anything which would hinder proper operation and cleaning lens, cassette heads, overheads, projector screens or replacing bulbs, belts, and batteries as needed; reports need for major repairs to supervisor.
  3. Instruction. Typical tasks: provides instruction or assistance to students or faculty on the correct operating techniques of various types of audiovisual equipment; may oversee the setup and operation of audiovisual equipment by student employees.
  4. Film and Video Tape Maintenance. Typical tasks: uses a 16-mm film inspection machine to clean and inspect film for flaws; splices film or audio and videocassette tapes to repair tears and cuts in film or tape, attaches leaders, and repairs sprocket damage; prepares report on problems found and the repairs made.
  5. Miscellaneous. Typical tasks: checks out equipment to staff and/or students; takes telephone or in person requests for audiovisual services; duplicates audiocassette tapes; dubs reel-to-reel tapes to audiocassettes.

RELATIONSHIPS WITH OTHERS

Employees in this class have regular contact in person with students, faculty members, and other agency staff to help with equipment operation, provide instruction on equipment use, and receive requests to schedule the use of audiovisual equipment.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Employees in this class work under general supervision of a unit supervisor. Daily work is scheduled from requests received for equipment delivery and setup. Work is primarily reviewed through daily contact with employee. Departmental policies and agency safety rules are used as guidelines for the proper setup and operation of equipment.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Positions are found in central and remote locations throughout State government (e.g., general government agencies, human or natural resource agencies, correctional, mental health, or higher education institutions, hospitals, etc.). They require the willingness to work within the environment associated with the position's location.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Three months of setup and operation experience with a variety of audiovisual equipment.
