GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF CLASS

The AUDIOVISUAL TECHNICIAN 1 provides support to the audiovisual services program by coordinating the delivery and setup of audiovisual equipment, training student workers in the setup and operation of equipment, and by operating, maintaining, and making minor repairs to a variety of audiovisual as well as sound amplification equipment.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES

This is the second level of a three-level series. It is distinguished from the lower level by having responsibility for training student workers, coordinating the delivery and setup of equipment, and maintaining and making minor repairs to audiovisual, video, and sound amplification equipment. It is distinguished from the higher level by the absence of involvement in determining equipment and systems requirements and acting as consultant to faculty and staff in the planning and design of new systems.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Equipment Scheduling/Coordination. Typical tasks: receives requests for equipment delivery and setup over the phone and in person from faculty and staff; coordinates the delivery, setup, and pickup of equipment throughout the day by scheduling the work of Audiovisual Assistant and/or student workers and checking the flow of equipment being used to ensure equipment is available and in proper storage location when needed; may be responsible for keeping inventory and service records and ordering parts for repairs.
  2. Training. Typical tasks: trains student workers on the correct setup and operating techniques of 16-mm motion picture, carousel, slide, and overhead projectors; demonstrates to students the procedures for cleaning equipment and changing bulbs, lens, and batteries; takes student workers along when setting up and operating equipment to provide hands-on training; may instruct faculty and staff on operation of equipment.
  3. Equipment Setup and Operation. Typical tasks: delivers and sets up film and slide projectors, video recording systems including video cameras, overhead projectors, audio recording equipment, television monitors, and other types of audiovisual equipment; may operate 16-mm motion picture projectors, overhead and slide projectors, as well as lighting and sound amplification equipment; returns equipment to proper storage area when no longer being used.
  4. Equipment Maintenance/Repair. Typical tasks: performs routine preventive maintenance by cleaning and lubing equipment, checking bulbs, belts, and batteries, and replacing when necessary for proper operation; replaces missing screws, hardware, and broken parts; may use voltmeters, hand tools, and service manuals to locate source of minor equipment problem and repair motion picture projectors, record players, audio and video tape recorders, and overhead, opaque, slide and filmstrip projectors.
  5. Miscellaneous. Typical tasks: may duplicate and edit reel-to-reel and cassette tapes, phono discs, and computer disks.

RELATIONSHIPS WITH OTHERS

Employees in this class have regular contact in person with faculty, staff, and students to assist with equipment operation and respond to inquiries regarding equipment use and availability.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Employees in this class work under the general supervision of a unit supervisor who assigns special tasks. Daily work is assigned from requests for the delivery and setup of equipment. Work is reviewed primarily through daily contact with employee to ensure adherence to setup and delivery schedules. Agency safety and administrative rules, departmental policies, and service manuals are used as guidelines in the scheduling, setting up, operating, and repairing of equipment.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Positions are found in central and remote locations throughout State government (e.g., general government agencies, human or natural resource agencies, correctional, mental health, or higher education institutions, hospitals, etc.). They require the willingness to work within the environment associated with the position's location.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Two years of full-time technical experience in the maintenance, repair and operation of audio-visual equipment.
