GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF CLASS

The AUTOMOTIVE MECHANIC 2 conducts complicated mechanical maintenance and repair work on automobiles, trucks, and other motorized equipment used in the field for transportation, hauling, and maintenance purposes.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES

This is the second level of a two-level series. This class is distinguished from the first level by performing complicated mechanical maintenance and repair work, (e.g., building transmissions, engine overhauls). The second level is further distinguished from the first level by the responsibility for keeping inventory of auto parts and supplies.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Vehicle Maintenance and Repair. Typical tasks: overhauls engines (rebuilds); overhauls transmissions; repairs air conditioning units; overhauls differentials; overhauls brakes; repairs or replaces electrical systems, (e.g., alternators, starters, batteries, regulators).
  2. Garage Coordination. Typical tasks: keeps inventory of parts and supplies; requisitions parts and supplies as needed; coordinates flow of vehicles awaiting maintenance or repairs; provides direct guidance to lower level auto mechanics who may assist with major repair work.
  3. Continuing Education. Typical tasks: studies new developments in auto mechanics and keeps up to date on developments of vehicle manufacturers, through books, videotapes, etc.

RELATIONSHIPS WITH OTHERS

Employees in this class have daily in-person contact with other State employees concerning vehicle complaints and repairs.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Employees in this class receive general supervision from an administrative superior. Assignments are received daily by written work order, which may indicate only that the engine doesn't sound right or that there is a noise in the engine. This class must diagnose the problem and make repairs. Work is reviewed upon completion for professional workmanship. Employees in this class use Federal and State emission laws, established guidelines, various vehicle repair manuals, and standard trade and safety practices in performing the duties of the job.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Positions are found in central and remote locations throughout State government (e.g., general government agencies, human or natural resource agencies, correctional, mental health, or higher education institutions, hospitals, etc.). They require the willingness to work within the environment associated with the position's location. They require the willingness to work in an environment containing dust, grime, odors, fumes and high levels of noise. They require the willingness to work overhead while lying on one's back under vehicles. They require the willingness to be on one's feet for extended periods. They require the willingness to lift heavy objects on a regular basis. They require the willingness to work outdoors on busy roadways, perhaps in inclement weather, when performing road service calls and repairs.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Four years of journey-level automotive mechanic's experience diagnosing and performing a variety of complex repair work on automobiles, trucks, or industrial equipment; OR
  • Completion of an approved automotive mechanic program from an accredited institution and three years of journey-level automotive mechanic's experience.

The training and experience should show a majority of the following areas:

  • repairing internal combustion engines and/or all motor vehicle components.
  • using advanced vehicle repair techniques.
  • diagnosing complex vehicle and/or equipment problems.
  • interpreting information from on-board computers.
  • applying shop reference manuals and safety and environmental laws, rules, and procedures.
  • applying customer service methods and procedures.
