POLICY

An employee of the university may not hire, appoint, or supervise a relative or member of their household or a relative or member of the employee’s supervisor’s household.

In addition, an employee may not supervise or participate in the processes of review and decision-making on matters concerning retention, promotion, salary, termination, or discipline of the employee’s relative or household member or a relative or household member of the employee’s supervisor.

reason for POLICY

Persons related to each other may be employed at the university in the same department or unit. An individual’s employment must be based on their qualifications, experience, training, and merits. Hiring officials must determine that individuals are qualified and suitable hires for the university.

This policy provides clarity regarding the hiring and supervision of an employee’s relatives and household members and the employee’s supervisor’s relatives and household members.

DEFINITIONS

Employee
All persons employed by the university, including, but not limited to, academic faculty, professional faculty, classified staff, law enforcement professionals, graduate assistants, and student employees.

Member of Household
Any person who resides with the employee or supervisor.

Relative
the employees or employees supervisor’s spouse or domestic partner, parent, step-parent, grandparent, child, step-child, grandchild, sibling, stepsibling, father-in-law, mother-in-law, son-in-law, daughter-in-law, brother-in-law, sister-in-law, or an individual for whom the employee or employee’s supervisor has a legal support obligation.

EXCEPTIONS

Exceptions to this policy will be granted only in cases where the Chief Human Resources, or designee, determines the exception to be in accordance with applicable law and in the best interest of the university.
