Information for Employees

The Central Payroll Office processes pay compensation to all university employees. We provide and maintain payroll documents for earnings, taxes and deductions. OSU pays approximately 13,000 faculty, staff and student employees monthly.

Effective January 2020

  • The new 2020 Federal Form W-4, Employee's Withholding Certificate, is very different from previous versions. This is due to the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act that changed tax laws starting in 2018.
  • While the IRS is not requiring current employees to complete a new W-4 form, we recommend everyone do a "paycheck checkup" to see if you need to make any adjustments to your current withholding, even if your tax situation has not changed.
  • Use the IRS's Tax Withholding Estimator. To effectively use the estimator, it is helpful to have a copy of your most recent pay stub and last year's tax return. The IRS indicates the estimator will be updated for the 2020 tax tables in early January. Note: Tax withholding will continue per your current W-4 form unless you chose to submit a new W-4.
  • The IRS has published Frequently Asked Questions that you may find helpful as you complete the form.

  • In 2019 the Oregon Department of Revenue created its own Oregon W-4 form for Oregon tax withholding, OR-W-4 Form.
    • If you complete a 2020 Federal W-4 form you will also need to complete a State W-4 form as we are not permitted to continue using prior federal forms as documentation for state withholding.
    • We recommend reviewing your Oregon withholding and make any adjustments as needed. Use Oregon's Withholding Calculator to determine the correct withholding for you Oregon State payroll taxes.
    • The Department of Revenue includes a number of FAQ's that are helpful as you complete the OR W-4 form.
